In 1992, two young mothers, Holly Sukenik and Betsy Santarlasci, began a 5-year-long conversation about the deterioration of Mitchell Park and the formation of a Friends group. In 1998, Holly and Betsy convened a group of interested neighbors and together the group outlined their vision of the Park as the focal point for the neighborhood to gather and a public space that deserved beautification and proposed uses for children’s playground, sports, exercise, picnicking, reading, walking and enjoyment of trees and flowers. After years of partnering with the Department of Park and Recreation, fundraising, and even an archaeological dig, the “new” Mitchell Park reopened on October 31, 2004.
Today, the Friends of Mitchell Park (FOMP) is an all volunteer non-profit organization dedicated to preserving the beauty of Mitchell Park for the enjoyment of neighbors and friends.
“A pleasant surprise in the middle of the city. Perfect location to catch a break during the crazy work day and calm ambiance to tell myself that it will all be okay.”
“If you live in Washington DC and you don’t take advantage of Mitchell Park, you are missing out. Mitchell Park is my own little reprieve from the bustle of city life. On a nice day, families play catch, couples picnic, and kids enjoy the playground. Yet, it’s never too busy to throw down a blanket and catch a nap."
The Activities Committee organizes events to bring the community together. New ideas, energy and time are always welcome. Past events include flea markets, Tango in the Park, a Square Dance, movies, and the Spring and Fall Festivals.
Maintaining 24,950 plantings in the Park is a daunting task. We need volunteers to help with various hands-on park projects. These projects include tree or garden planting, watering, weeding, raking, sweeping and litter pickup. You can support us by volunteering during the months of April through November or join us for our annual Spring and Fall plantings.
Because of budgetary constraints in the District, maintenance of the Park has increasingly become the responsibility of private citizens. At Mitchell Park, this is a year-round operation costing about $45,000.
Friends of Mitchell Park is a 501 c(3) non-profit organization made up of neighbors Our sole revenue is derived from neighborhood contributions. Your contributions are tax deductible.
